FAQ

Air Compressor Oil Testing Is Critical
Air Compressor Oil Testing is Critical
The importance of a scheduled preventative maintenance plan for your compressor system can not be overstated. And a proper PM routine should include regularly monitoring the condition of your air compressor oil. The extreme heat in the compression chamber of your compressor, coupled with the entrained air and the metal to metal contact is reason enough to warrant oil testing. The combination, though, of temperature variations, dusty environments, dirty coolers, contact wear, and varnish buildup, make the need for analysis of your lubricant critical. Any one of these factors can create an unpredictable oil life, and may cause a failure that a routine air compressor oil sample would have readily indicated.
Most local compressor service companies are accustomed to taking these samples and can process them for you through outside laboratories. These labs will apply many different tests including Rotating Bomb Oxidative Stability, Kinematic Viscosity, Demulsibility, Four Ball Wear, Foaming Characteristics, and Titration to determine the condition of your oil and can possibly provide indicators prior to catastrophic failure. You may find trace metals that indicate a bearing failure or metal to metal contact. You may discover oil varnish that can ruin the ability of your compressor to properly cool itself. Varnish buildup inside oil coolers has been known to cause units to catch fire. Bearing failure can cause your rotors to lock up to the point that they are not repairable. A simple sample will let you know.
Schedule a test before you have an unscheduled breakdown. It is far easier to change your oil, than your air compressor.
